Scholars of the past have written extensively on the linguistic and rhetorical inimitability (i'jaz) of the Qur'an, with their works meeting the needs of their time. However, with the spread of colloquial dialects, people became estranged from the Qur'an and its eloquence, unable to grasp how it captivated the minds of the eloquent Arabs—even if they recognized much of its scientific inimitability. Al-Rafi'i's book, 'I'jaz al-Qur'an,' was a unique journey, in which he—though late in his time—accomplished what the early scholars did not, as Muhammad Rashid Rida said in his introduction, advising all Arabic readers to read it. His book describes the Qur'an, its compilation and codification, recitation, methods of performance and intonation, the language of the Qur'an, the seven ahruf (modes of recitation), its vocabulary, its influence on the Arabic language, Arab identity in the Qur'an, and numerous chapters on its inimitability and eloquence. It then discusses the Prophet's eloquence, conciseness of speech, the negation of poetry from him, and his impact on the Arabic language.
