The personality of Ibn Hazm and his works have captivated many researchers, both Arab and non-Arab, in both the eastern and western parts of the Islamic world throughout the ages. He has also attracted the attention of many orientalists and scholars since the late 19th century.

His Zahiri doctrine sparked wide debate and discussions among scholars, dividing them into supporters and opponents, critics and defenders.

Spanish scholars, naturally, have shown great interest in him. However, no other orientalist from other European countries received him with as much regard, dedicating a significant part of their life as Palacios did, who conducted a detailed study of Ibn Hazm’s life and deeply explored his scientific, legal, literary, and historical heritage.

According to Palacios, Ibn Hazm was the first historian of religious ideas through his book 'Al-Fasl fi al-Milal wa al-Ahwa wa al-Nihal'.
