In childhood, we were often instructed by elders to pray. We would comply but found the prayer burdensome, so we stopped. We'd hear a preacher talk about the significance of prayer and the penalties for neglecting it, so we'd pray again, only to find it heavy and abandon it once more. We thought that those who kept up with prayer had a divine gift we lacked. We waited for that gift, and in doing so, missed prayer after prayer because we never addressed the core issue: why did prayer feel so burdensome?
