I wrote this book with a special group of readers in mind: those who love to learn about learning but do not necessarily have a significant psychological background. These readers will benefit from studying the historical roots of learning theories but prefer to focus their energies on contemporary ideas and perspectives. They find learning theories fascinating and exciting but lose patience when they don't see the connection to daily practice. While they are capable of reading dry, concise books, they are more likely to learn effectively from a text that shows how different concepts are interconnected and provides ample examples that specifically emphasize meaningful learning (true understanding) of the material.
Users of the fifth edition will find several changes in the sixth edition. As always, I have updated the text in many places to reflect current theoretical viewpoints and research findings related to learning, cognitive, and instructional practices. I also work diligently to refine my writing, eliminating unnecessary repetitions and clarifying points that I find awkward or ambiguously phrased.
