The author states that his motivation for writing this book was the high demand and appreciation among scholars for comprehensive biographies of the nation's key figures. While others had compiled histories that included these figures, they were often mixed with others and incomplete. Therefore, he decided to dedicate separate books to different groups to facilitate easier access and study for those interested in a specific category. He authored books on the Prophets, the Companions, Quranic exegetes, hadith memorizers, grammarians, legal theorists, and many others.

These works cover the majority of the nation's prominent figures. The only remaining major group was the caliphs, whose stories are of great interest. Thus, he dedicated this book to them. He did not include those who claimed the caliphate through rebellion without establishing rule, nor did he include any of the Ubaydid (Fatimid) caliphs, as he considered their imamate illegitimate.

The book begins with introductory chapters containing important and invaluable information. The accounts of strange occurrences and wondrous events are summarized from the history of Hafiz al-Dhahabi, with the responsibility for their accuracy attributed to him, as stated at the beginning of the book.
