The Saudi poet Mohammed Mashat, known by the pen name "Zimam," is one of the most prominent poets of Saudi Arabia in the 20th century. He was born in Mecca in 1899 in a well-established scholarly family, and he received his education at Al-Sawlatiya School and the Grand Mosque from Mecca's leading scholars.
Although he began his literary career in classical poetry, he became more famous through his colloquial Hijazi poetry. For three years, Mohammed Mashat published daily poems in the Hijazi dialect in the Saudi newspaper "Al-Bilad" under the pen name "Zimam." These poems were characterized by quatrains reflecting daily life and social occasions in Hijaz.
