Harun al-Rashid is considered one of the most famous Abbasid caliphs and the most frequently mentioned even in foreign sources, such as the German annals during the era of Emperor Charlemagne, which mentioned him by the name (Aron), and the Japanese and Chinese annals, which called him (Alon). Arabic sources, however, have elaborated on him to the extent that historical facts have blended with the fiction of stories, especially in the book "One Thousand and One Nights," which depicted him as a caliph extravagant in luxury and pleasures, who knew nothing but amusement, drinking wine, and dancing with singing girls. In reality, this caliph was one of the best. He would perform the Hajj one year and go on a military campaign the next. It was mentioned that he used to pray one hundred rak'ahs every day of his caliphate until he died, and he would give a thousand in charity. He loved scholars, revered the sanctity of religion, detested debate and idle talk, and would weep for himself, his distractions, and his sins, especially when he was preached to. Many countries were conquered during his time, the reach of Islam expanded, security was established, prosperity prevailed, and goodness abounded like never before. Indeed, this caliph was of excellent character, both in public and in private.
