Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (673 AH – 748 AH / 1274 AD – 1348 AD) was a prominent Muhaddith (Hadith scholar) and Imam Hafiz. He uniquely combined two exceptional qualities: a comprehensive grasp of Islamic history, its events and figures, and a profound knowledge of the principles of al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil (narrator criticism and validation). He was, in himself, a complete school of thought.

Imam al-Dhahabi was a scholar who approached history through the lens of Prophetic Hadith and its sciences. This is evident in his meticulous focus on biographies, which formed the cornerstone of many of his books and the core of his historical thinking. It is said he was named al-Dhahabi ("the golden one") because he evaluated men (narrators) with the precision of a jeweler weighing gold. He studied in Damascus, Egypt, Baalbek, and Alexandria, and a large number of students learned from him. He was strongly inclined towards the Hanbali school of thought and authored numerous works on Hadith and biographies of narrators. He recited and taught the Quran in its various readings, and his historical writings alone amount to nearly two hundred books, some of which are voluminous.
