About the Author: Mohamedou Ould Slahi was born in a small Mauritanian city in 1970. He received a scholarship to a college in Germany, where he graduated and worked as an engineer for several years. He returned to Mauritania in 2000. The following year, he was arrested by Mauritanian authorities at the request of the United States and rendered to Jordan. From there, he was transferred to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and finally to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, on August 5, 2005, where he was subjected to severe torture. In 2010, a federal judge ordered his immediate release, but the U.S. government appealed the decision. He has never been charged with a crime by the U.S. government and remains in detention at Guantánamo.
