Mikhail Gorbachev entered history through its widest gates as the last president of a superpower that occupied one-sixth of the Earth's landmass, known as the 'Soviet Union.' His reformist policy, dubbed 'Perestroika,' paved the way for the collapse of this state and its dissolution into a group of independent countries. Like any major political transformation, this policy was accompanied by profound intellectual shifts, moving from a regime that had fought religion for seven decades to one that would be forced to re-employ religion to solidify its position among the masses. This novel specifically addresses the intellectual turmoil that accompanied the collapse of an old political system based on communist ideology into a new system searching for its own intellectual identity. The main characters of the novel (Mullah Muratali Haji Rahimov, Pastor Martin Bondis, and Father Vasily), whose fates sometimes intersect and at other times engage in conflict with one another, are characterized as intellectually and psychologically troubled figures, reflecting the nature of that difficult era.
