Westerners often view Islam as a religion of rigidity, identity, and dynamism. This perspective is sometimes shared by radical Muslims who take pride in re-Islamizing societies and individuals. However, Olivier Roy fundamentally questions this theory, arguing that the West, globalization, and individualism are integral to the process of re-Islamization, whether in violent or moderate forms. The spread through the internet and political engagement has served as Western models for activism. In the realm of re-Islamization, new religious elements in the West prevail, often unbeknownst to Islamic activists: individual openness, factional stances, and the fabrication of sects and behaviors, against a backdrop of ignorance. Far from being an expression of the 'clash of civilizations,' today’s tensions related to Islam are symptoms of its Westernization and the resultant crises, which Islam struggles to coexist with.
