Globalization, as conventionally understood, is a competition between nations: America against Chile, China, or Europe. But in our time, it connects the wealthy and influential, whose common interests and concerns align more with their counterparts in other nations than with their own countrymen who earn their living through labor. In his book, Global Class War, Jeff Faux demonstrates that the new global market policy is governed by a secret party he calls the 'Davos Party'—a global network of investment firm officials, executives, politicians, and journalists defending their private interests. Although Clinton and Bush pursued different strategies, they supported a single agenda that benefits investment firms, while ordinary Americans bore the costs of outsourced jobs, military losses, and unsustainable foreign debt. Faux shows how agreements like NAFTA and the WTO collude with the global elite to tear up the social contract that allows for a wide sharing of capitalist benefits. To avoid this trap, Jeff Faux presents a framework for a new transnational policy to support the 'democratic redesign of globalization'.
Global Class War will shape the political debate in America and the world for years to come, not only for the way it defines the problems of globalization but also for its vision for solving them. Jeff Faux founded the Economic Policy Institute, is a contributing editor at The American Prospect, and a member of the editorial board of Dissent magazine. His articles and commentary have appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, USA Today, and Harper's.
