Today, I uphold in my office a motto I adopted in public life: 'A leader remains strong until requesting a favor for themselves.' I believe that anyone who seeks something for themselves will always have a price, equivalent at least to what they request. Thus, bribery is enveloped in terms that make it appear more presentable. Bribery is a brazen face of corruption, which is a plague in modern societies. I am convinced that the relationship between democracy and combating corruption is deep, even organic. The most effective way to fight corruption is to develop accountability and oversight methods in society, in all their forms. Accountability is a distinctive feature of democracy. This is why we repeatedly state that, in our national project, democracy comes first, second, and third. What applies to Lebanon in this regard is equally applicable to the rest of the Arab countries.
