Gaza is the southern region of the Palestinian coastal plain along the Mediterranean; shaped as a narrow strip in the northeast of the Sinai Peninsula. It is one of two isolated regions within the borders of Mandatory Palestine that were not controlled by Zionist forces in the 1948 war and did not become part of the newly formed State of Israel at that time. It covers approximately 1.33% of the area of Palestine.
