"I lived in a time of widows' sighs, men's death rattles, and children's moans. I witnessed oppression, subjugation, and misery, and I became certain that its convoys would be destructive to the human self. I lived through a difficult, dynamic time, both acting and acted upon. A time in which we formed our knowledge and built our dreams—rosy daydreams intertwined with a reality of lies, slander, and the buying of consciences." (From the Introduction)
