By applying Ibn Khaldun's concept of the renewed genesis, meaning both rupture and continuity, this book brilliantly highlights the process of re-establishing Quranic Islam into Hadith Islam, paralleling the shift from the Islam of the message to the Islam of history, and from the Islam of 'Umm al-Qura' to the Islam of conquests. The danger lies not only in this shift of reference from Quran to Hadith but also in the transformation of the individual in Islam into something akin to a robot, who only moves according to texts that govern both public and private affairs. With al-Shafi'i's premise that the Prophet never speaks except by Revelation, even when not reciting the Quran, the Hadiths attributed to the Prophet after his death were elevated to the level of Revelation. The scholars of Hadith and Fiqh agreed to regard the Sunnah, like the Quran, as supreme divine legislation. As with all things divine and transcendent, the Sunnah and its rulings were liberated from the conditions of time and place. This ruled that the Arab Islamic mind retracts upon itself and remains stagnant in endless repetition. This also blocked the pathway for the discovery of the concept of evolution and the dialectic of progress, along with the consequent changes in substantive rulings of human, not divine, origin. Ultimately, this laid a foundation for resistance to modernity, threatening today with a relapse into a new dark age.
