Although the preparation and training of mainstream teachers have received immense attention, the preparation of teachers for students with special needs is an issue that deserves greater focus. Children with disabilities are in more need of a specialized teacher who understands their needs, how to help them, and recognizes their potential. Therefore, some of the goals that special needs teachers strive to achieve include:

  • Identifying exceptional children through appropriate assessment and diagnostic tools for each category.
  • Knowing the teaching methods for each category of special education to implement and achieve the goals of educational programs based on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Preparing educational aids and technological activities specific to each category of special education.
  • Developing disability prevention programs in general, and working to reduce the incidence of disability where possible.
  • Considering individual differences among students by guiding them well and helping them grow according to their abilities, aptitudes, and interests.
  • Providing scientific research tools to benefit from the abilities of the gifted and talented and to guide them.

Through my review of many specialized books, my analytical perspective on their content, and my reading of numerous articles concerning special needs teachers, this book has emerged as a reference for university students. It contains questionnaires and scales that may benefit researchers and graduate students, as it provides comprehensive and modern information about the role of the special needs teacher. The book consists of seven chapters as follows:

  • Chapter One: Defines children with special needs, their characteristics, needs, global trends in their care, experiences of some countries in their education, international teaching standards for them, and the problems they face and how to solve and address them.
  • Chapter Two: Discusses the importance of contemporary trends in professional development for teachers, the definition of a special education teacher, their characteristics and skills, the necessary teaching competencies, the role of the special education teacher in mainstream classrooms, experiences of some countries in preparing special education teachers, and assessment and evaluation in the field of special education.
  • Chapter Three: Addresses the training needs of special education teachers, the justifications for their training, the approved methods, the objectives of training programs for special needs teachers, and the principles of the content of these training programs.
  • Chapter Four: Covers the technology of educational aids and activities for students with special needs, the educational rules to be observed when using them, and the characteristics of good educational aids for these students.
  • Chapter Five: Discusses teaching methods for individuals with special needs, the components of special teaching processes, and teaching methods for those with learning disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities, autism, and the gifted and talented.
  • Chapter Six: Presents a collection of scientific scales and programs targeting special needs teachers, including a scale on the impact of in-service training, a scale of teaching competencies for teaching sex education, and a scale of teachers' knowledge about autism spectrum disorder.
  • Chapter Seven: Provides practical models for the special education teacher in mainstream classrooms.

The circle of research in the field of special education is still in its early stages. This humble effort is a step forward for specialists, intended to be a foundation for their future studies.
