The day I asked Sœur Marie to enter the church during choir practice, she looked at me with a flustered calmness and then said, 'Of course, you can.' Suddenly, Mademoiselle Najwa appeared before me with an ominous expression, and it seemed to me that a viscous fluid was seeping from the pores of her face. I saw her approaching, saw her open mouth, her white tongue, and her lips which seemed paler than usual, and I heard my name echoing loudly in the corridors followed by a scream: 'What are you doing here?!' Fortunately, Sœur Marie was still standing by my side and answered Mademoiselle Najwa that she was the one who had allowed me to enter. 'But she's a Muslim!' said Mademoiselle Najwa... I didn't think at that moment why Mademoiselle Najwa said 'Muslim' in that particular way and not like my mother says it. It didn't occur to me that the Lord, the husband of all the nuns and the owner of the church, might prefer one to be a Christian, and that this was what angered Mademoiselle Najwa... In fact, I had not thought about the characteristics of the Lord and the issues He raises among people until then.

Shatha Sharfeddine studied Special Education in Savigny (Switzerland) and Eurythmy dance in Hamburg (Germany). After spending several years practicing and teaching dance in Switzerland and then in Beirut, she moved to Berlin and worked in the cultural and artistic field, where she participated in organizing many artistic events in both cities in collaboration with German and Lebanese cultural institutions. She returned to Beirut in 2006, where she works as an independent artist and writer.
