Guy Montag is a firefighter. His job is to burn forbidden books, as rulers consider them to be the origin of all evil and tragedy. Despite this, Montag is unhappy. Influenced by his neighbor Clarisse, he starts stealing the books he is supposed to burn. When his crime is discovered, he is ordered to burn his house. Afterwards, Montag flees to the countryside where he meets a group of fugitives, each having memorized a number of books until society is ready to rediscover them. This novel sparked wide controversy upon its release, from praise to criticism. Today, there is a global consensus that it is one of the great literary creations of the twentieth century.
