Synopsis

The devil steals the moon to prevent the blacksmith Levko from marrying his beloved Oksana... Pandemonium breaks out in the market due to the panic caused by the "Red Svitka"... The village elders hide in sacks of coal in the witch Solokha's hut... Through the lens of black comedy, Gogol portrays the life of simple villagers in the Ukrainian countryside, as told through the tales of the beekeeper Panko and his guests.

About the Author

Mikhail Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852) is one of the greatest and most famous Russian writers, considered the father of Russian prose. Gorky famously stated, "We all came out from under Gogol's 'Overcoat'," referring to his story "The Overcoat." He rose to fame with the publication of "Evenings...", and his most famous works include "Taras Bulba," "The Government Inspector," and "Dead Souls."
