In Cairo 2011, Bastan Al-Bahr, who was born near the ruins of the Alamut Castle in Iran, is in pursuit of an elusive goal: to retrieve the lost tale of Princess Zumurruda of Qaf by purifying her biography from distortions it has suffered over centuries. From one chapter to another, we follow what Bastan narrates and what she conspires to conceal. We observe her reviving the legend of Mount Qaf to reunite its people from exile. Her only means is to mend what has shattered through writing. In "Emerald Mountain," Mansoura Ez Eldin engages with "One Thousand and One Nights" in a manner that transcends mere titular connection, delivering a work that both plays with and dialogues with the tales, adopting some narrative styles inspired by them. The work sensitively examines the relationship between the written and the oral, engaging with the concept of a story within a story, an awareness of writing a novel arising from the core of "One Thousand and One Nights" and intersecting with religious heritage.
