Ahmad ibn Ja'far ibn Musa was born in the month of Sha'ban in the year 224 AH and belongs to the Barmakid family. Unlike his ancestors, Ahmad grew up poor and needy. He was unattractive with protruding eyes, which led Ibn al-Mu'tazz to call him Jahza, a nickname that became more famous than his real name. Jahza al-Barmaki earned his living by reciting poetry, singing, and playing the tanbur. He is described as a witty person who loved companionship and socializing. Jahza lived a long life and passed away in the month of Sha'ban in the year 324 AH, having reached the age of one hundred exactly. Accounts of his place of death vary; it is said he died in the village of Jil, south of Baghdad, while others claim he died in Wasit, between Basra and Kufa.
