Al-Rafi'i did not leave behind as much poetry as he did prose. In fact, poetry represents only a small part of his overall literary output. His three-part Diwan and the first part of Diwan Al-Nazrat can be considered the only poetic works subject to study and research. Al-Rafi'i structured his poetry collection into three parts, each with an introduction presenting his positions and opinions on the art of poetry, both past and present. This was something most poets of his time did not do, as they did not write introductions for their own collections; instead, others wrote for them.
