"What is your question, Mr. Adley?" His voice was as calm as ever, but I suddenly saw something frightening in his eyes... No, if I want to be honest, the source of fear wasn't just in his eyes; I felt it spread into the air around me. The rhythmic sound from the hall to my left was no longer just the ticking of a clock; it became the sound of the executioner's foot tapping as he watched the condemned being led to the gallows. The smell of oil and leather became pungent and menacing, and the whistling of the wind grew louder. For a brief moment, I was sure the front door would shatter, revealing not just Thirty-fifth Street, but a scene of Clark Ashton Smith where twisted trees stood, casting silhouettes against a barren horizon under suns beginning to set in a red glow. He knew what I meant by my question; I saw it in his gray eyes. I wanted to ask him: Where do these things come from? I know where these things come from, Stevens. But where are you planning to go? Who put that look in your eyes that doesn't fade with the passing days? And who printed it on your face? Where are we right now, at this very moment? But he was waiting for my question."

In a thrilling atmosphere, the events of Stephen King's novel unfold, stirring in the reader a great deal of curiosity, a bit of fear, awe, and mystery as they follow the story of Sandra's severed head, which continued to breathe after being separated from her body in "A Winter's Tale."

As in this novella, the reader also follows the events of the other three: "Hope Springs Eternal," "Summer of Corruption," and "The Fall from Innocence." The reader eagerly follows these works by Stephen King, drawn in by the elements of suspense that the author builds throughout the events until the very end.
