Intrigued by the collapse of authoritarian political systems worldwide, the author was prompted to study the similarities and differences in the democratic transitions of Eastern Europe and Latin American countries, comparing them with Arab nations. Forced to leave his country, Syria, as a dissident, he became preoccupied with the possibility of achieving democratic transition, especially in his homeland. He visited more than fifty countries in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Arab world to learn from their experiences. The author explored the ideas and experiences of pioneers of democratic transition globally, from Gene Sharp—from whom most of the book's ideas are derived—to Gandhi and Martin Luther King, leading up to the 'Arab Spring' revolutions.
