In 'Darkness from the West', Ghazali begins by discussing certain Orientalists who live among us as part of the nation of Muhammad but speak with the tongues of the West. They see Islam as only a religion of wars. He then mentions some sayings from Arab Orientalists, as he calls them, stating that religion is only accepted by reason and not by belief. Ghazali eloquently responds that religion requires faith, and faith involves imagination, which is not solely the heart's function. Thus, they attributed a trait to the heart that it never possessed. He argues that many faiths are followed emotionally, not rationally, like most religions in Asia and cow worshippers. Therefore, true religion is not accepted just by the heart but by the mind as well.
