The printed press is one of the most effective and influential media methods in shaping public opinion. This is because newspapers are circulated among people regardless of their class, social strata, or intellectual, cultural, and social beliefs. Even if radio and television have a direct and strong impact on the public, their effect remains momentary or fleeting.
Linguistically, the term 'press' (sahafa) is derived from the work of newspapers (suhuf). The press is the art of creating and writing newspapers and magazines. A journalist (sahafi) is one who works in the papers, similar to a stationer. The word 'journal' is a borrowing from the foreign term for daily newspapers. Rashid al-Dahdah later proposed the term 'sahifa,' while his linguistic counterpart adopted 'jarida' to mean written newspapers.
Journalism is the profession based on gathering and analyzing news, verifying its credibility, and presenting it to the public. This news often pertains to the latest developments in political, local, cultural, sports, social, and other arenas.
There are three clear stages that every country goes through to develop its mass media, which includes print, radio, and television. As is known, anything capable of growth and development must pass through stages that may vary in length or number, depending on its nature and circumstances.
