We are in the age of media and communication. The communication we experience today has reached advanced stages of development and vast horizons, with its means, specializations, and functions diversifying. No vital administrative facility, or social or service institution, can perform its functions and tasks for the public without resorting to communication tools, in their various forms and levels, which are responsible for transmitting information and ideas, and carrying out the process of reception and interaction between these institutions and the public.
The chapters in this book, "Communication and Societal Issues," attempt to explain these communication tasks and functions by discussing the social, political, cultural, and economic functions of media, outlining the challenges they face, and the necessary ethical controls within which the media and communicators can carry out their tasks, consistent with the role played by communication media in society.
We recognize that the subject we have chosen to address in these scholarly chapters leads to numerous sub-topics and a multitude of issues that are difficult to cover comprehensively in a single book. However, through these pages, we have tried to address many topics and issues related to the role of media in a society that aspires to succeed in the fields of education, awareness, development, and all essential vital areas.
