This problem does not arise from a vacuum; the causes and factors leading to child abuse and neglect are numerous. Some are related to children's characteristics and behaviors, such as developmental immaturity, special needs, or difficult temperaments, stubbornness, and rebellion. Others are linked to factors related to the parents' personalities, abusive and painful childhood experiences, or psychological disorders that require treatment. Abuse can also come from other family members, particularly in extended families, as seen in cases of sexual abuse. This abuse may also be perpetrated by family friends, strangers, and neighbors.
