This is the second part of the trilogy by Ahlam Mosteghanemi, following 'Memory of the Flesh'. The author, the protagonist, seeks to write a new book. She meets a journalist, and a love story develops between them. The author discovers that her lover is obsessed with 'Khaled Ben Toual', the hero of her first novel, the painter who lost an arm in the Liberation War and signs his articles with his name. She borrows a book from his library and admires the handwritten margins by its reader next to the original text. Like 'Memory of the Flesh', 'Chaos of the Senses' is a love story with three protagonists instead of two. By chance, in the last meeting between the lovers, when Khaled tells her he does not want to continue together, she learns that the house he lives in and the library are not his but belong to Abdel Haq, his journalist friend escaping Islamists who threatened him with death. Thus, the author discovers that she is repeating the same scenario of 'Memory of the Flesh'. She loves not Khaled but his friend Abdel Haq. As usual, love misses the target.
