"Buddenbrooks" is Thomas Mann's first novel, published in 1901 when he was 26 years old. With the publication of the second edition in 1903, the novel achieved great success, leading to Thomas Mann being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929. Although the Nobel Prize is not awarded for a specific work, the Swedish Academy identified "Buddenbrooks" as the primary reason for Mann's win.

Thomas Mann began writing the novel in October 1897, at the age of 22. It was completed over three years in July 1900 and published in October 1901. His goal was to write a novel about the conflict between the worlds of businessmen and artists, presented as a family saga.

It is noteworthy that the great writer Naguib Mahfouz was influenced by Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks" trilogy, and it was a major reason for writing his famous trilogy: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street, which also revolves around the same theme... the story of a family's rise and fall.
