Bidayat al-Mujtahid wa Nihayat al-Muqtasid (The Distinguished Jurist's Primer) is a foundational text on comparative Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), authored by the renowned Maliki philosopher and scholar, Ibn Rushd (Averroes). It is widely regarded as one of the best books for systematically explaining the reasons behind the differences of opinion among Islamic scholars on various legal matters.
In the book's introduction, Ibn Rushd states: "My purpose in this book is to set down for myself, as a memorandum, the legal issues that are agreed upon and those that are disputed, along with their supporting evidence, and to highlight the subtle points of disagreement in a manner that establishes principles and foundations... These are the issues that were either agreed upon or famously disputed among the Muslim jurists from the time of the Companions, may God be pleased with them, until the practice of taqlid (following a school of thought without knowing the evidence) became widespread."
