English is distinguished as the world's primary language today, serving as the mother tongue for Britain, America, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and as the second official language for African countries like Nigeria and Zambia, and Asian countries like India and Singapore. It is also given special attention as a foreign language in education, media, and international relations, as is the case in our Arab world. Since the Arabic library lacks a collection of literary selections from these regions, the 'Travel through Translated Stories' series aims to fill this gap. It presents short stories from Asia, Africa, Europe, America, the Caribbean, and Oceania. The translated stories are distributed over two books: the first includes monolingual worlds (To Before Babel), and the second features characters moving within a multilingual framework (To Beyond Babel). This distribution is ultimately procedural; translator Khalid Al Balooshi starts from the premise that humans, whether monolingual or multilingual, remain estranged and exiled wherever they are. The source of our alienation is our humanity. As he sees it, we are souls that are not consistent, yet we have no way to connect unless our meaning aligns with that of others. When this happens, names, locations, and roles emerge, leading to the effort to adapt ourselves according to convention. This human paradox involves psychological and ethical implications that the translated stories reveal artistically, and which the translator-writer seeks to explore in a third critical book of the series (Demolishing the Tower of Babel).
