A burden that has troubled me for forty years, traversing two worlds so different they are contradictory: Lebanon, with its brilliant history of civilizations and a reality filled with chaos, civil wars, neighbors turning on each other, and others' wars being fought at the expense of its people. And Canada, newly born, with a civilization that has placed it at the forefront, providing its people with everything they need to live in safety and security in a homeland of justice and equality. I embodied this burden of contradiction as a trust to be placed in the hands of decision-makers. For a lost homeland... and a people estranged in their own land.

About the Author:

Sami Assi is an engineer who received his secondary education at Al-Amiliyah College in Beirut. He then joined the Center for Mathematical Studies at the University of Lyon, France, to pursue studies in physical and chemical sciences. He later traveled to Canada, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from Laval University, Quebec, in 1976, where he also pursued a master's degree and taught chemical technology. He continued his graduate studies at HEC Montréal. Returning to Lebanon, he worked in both public and private sectors, holding several administrative positions. He represented Lebanon in numerous Arab and international conferences and chaired the Lebanese delegation for the "Euro-Mediterranean Industrial Cooperation" team from 1996 to 2004. He is married with four children and five grandchildren.
