In 1948, Bertolt Brecht returns to Berlin, where the communist regime relies on him to establish a proletarian and socialist theater as a cultural front for the system. The playwright meets actress Maria Eich, who becomes his lover. Unbeknownst to him, the young woman documents his words and actions daily, reads his correspondence, and faithfully reports everything she observes and hears to the Stasi or political police.
