Jean Said Makdisi is a writer based in Beirut. She was born in Jerusalem. For several years, she taught at Beirut University College (later the Lebanese American University). She has published numerous studies and articles, and participated in regional and international conferences in the fields of feminism and literary criticism.

Her English publications include "Beirut Fragments: A War Memoir," which was selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the best books of 1990 and is published in Arabic by Dar al-Saqi, and "Teta, Mother and Me: Three Generations of Arab Women," published by Saqi Books-London and W. W. Norton-New York.
