She stared at the huge iron door that stood before her with a deadly resolve, as if it held behind it the life she knew nothing about yet. It stretched, grew taller, and widened as if it were a barrier between the earth and the sky, between her and hope. She felt that the more she stared at it, the bigger and thicker it became, turning into an executioner, a monster, a demon, and many men. She felt it was connected to the wall and the entire room, growing more solid and cohesive, while the room shrank, narrowed, and became a deep pit in the earth. She wasn't thinking about her wound after the blood had dried on her fingertips and her face, mixed with tears, saliva, and mucus. The big door was what consumed her thoughts. She sat on the bed opposite it, resting her head against the wall... And the more she thought about it, the more distant people, life, her neighbors, her work, her laughter, her mother, and their home became—even the scoundrel 'Nasser,' for whom she had laid her heart at his feet because he was the first man in her life to say beautiful words to her.
