Welcome to "Basic Counselling Skills: A Helper's Manual". Those who use counseling skills can be divided into two groups: professional psychotherapists/counselors on one hand, and guides or helpers on the other. The second group includes all those who use counseling skills as professional assistants or semi-independent counselors, as part of non-counseling-based job roles, as volunteers in counseling and assistance agencies, or in peer support groups. The main purpose of this book is to aid in the training of these counselors. Additionally, the book can be used as an introduction to counseling skills for those intending to become professional counselors.

The book was designed in response to the question: "How can I make this book's material as accessible and easy to learn from as possible?" Once again, in this fourth edition, the book is divided into 29 short chapters or learning units, and the content is confined to only the essentials. The author does not provide references throughout the book as the target audience is the practitioner, not the academic researcher.

The book is divided into three parts. Part One, the Introduction, consists of six chapters that lay the groundwork for understanding the use of basic counseling skills across a range of situations. At the end of chapters three to six, there are activities designed to help increase reader engagement. Part Two, Specific Counselling Skills, consists of 17 chapters designed to present a wide range of basic counseling skills. Each chapter describes the skill, provides one or more examples of its use, and then encourages you to practice the skill by undertaking one or more activities. Part Three, Further Considerations, consists of six chapters. The first two chapters introduce relaxation and how to manage crises. The remaining chapters aim to increase your awareness of ethical issues, dealing with clients from different backgrounds, supervision, and how to become more skilled. Again, each of these chapters ends with one or more activities.
