Few issues have been as controversial as the Islamic legal ruling on bank interest. This issue has been caught between those who permit it and those who forbid it. While official bodies in Egypt, represented by Al-Azhar and the Egyptian Dar al-Ifta, have adopted the stance of permissibility, the majority of scholars and international Islamic jurisprudence councils have adopted the stance of prohibition. All this has left Muslims in a state of confusion: Which opinion should they follow? Should they adopt the opinion of those who permit bank interest or those who forbid it? In this context, this book comes to inform the ordinary reader, as well as the specialist, about the justifications given for permitting bank interest from the beginning of the last century to the present day. It discusses and refutes these justifications in an objective manner that combines authenticity and modernity, Sharia and reason, and the reality of today's economy. The book concludes with a collection of dated and documented fatwas on the issue of bank interest. We ask Allah to inspire us with what is right, protect us from error, and to judge between us and our people in truth, for He is the best of judges.
