The wild banana or Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a type of banana-like plant with upright wooden stems commonly known as Strelitzia Nicolai, growing up to 7-8 meters in height.

Light

Needs bright indirect light. These plants can become quite large and require plenty of light to grow. They also need a lot of light to bloom indoors, which rarely happens! We suggest finding a setup that provides at least 6-8 hours of indirect sunlight each day. Banana leaves can survive in low light, but will produce smaller leaves and grow slowly. You can plant your Bird of Paradise outside, but remember to acclimate it by placing it in the shade for two weeks before moving it to full sunlight!

Watering

Letting the top layer of soil dry out before watering. When you water, saturate the soil until excess water drains through the growing pot. As this houseplant requires a lot of bright light, the soil may dry out faster, so be prepared to water the plant frequently. Reduce watering during autumn and winter months.

Temperature

Between 18 - 29°C is suitable for the plant. Being a tropical plant, it doesn't like being cold, so if you have brought the plant outdoors during warmer months, bring it back inside before nighttime temperatures drop below 5°C.

Humidity

Strelitzia Nicolai lives in medium humidity, but additional humidity will help it grow. Place your Bird of Paradise in a naturally humid area, or use a humidifier or a pebble tray with water to create the ideal environment. Learn how to increase humidity for your indoor plants!

Fertilizer

Using a diluted full liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Alternatively, you can cover the soil with a 1-inch layer of organic compost. Scratch the compost into the top layer of soil and water well! The Bird of Paradise can grow relatively quickly, and providing extra nutrients can help the plant reach its full potential.

Growth Rate

The Bird of Paradise is a fast-growing indoor plant that can grow higher than the ceiling! Expect it to grow by more than 2 feet annually in the right conditions.
