Written tests were the primary method for assessing student learning. This book is divided into five chapters. The first chapter addresses the concepts of traditional and modern assessment, its benefits and purposes, and the justifications for the modern view of assessment, leading to the concept of authentic assessment.

The second chapter provides a detailed presentation with practical examples of authentic assessment strategies: performance-based assessment, paper-and-pencil assessment, observation, assessment through communication, and self-review. The chapter also presents authentic assessment tools: checklists, rating scales, rubrics, learning logs, and anecdotal records.

The third chapter reviews the importance of using a portfolio as a form of authentic assessment in evaluating student learning, with examples of portfolios for various subjects.

The fourth chapter is dedicated to discussing the concept, importance, and purposes of achievement tests, along with practical steps for preparing them.

The fifth chapter presents the necessary statistics for analyzing achievement test results, such as measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, and coefficients of correlation, difficulty, discrimination, and distractor effectiveness, as well as methods for verifying test validity and reliability.
