Attachment theory describes the nature of long-term relationships between human beings. It posits that a child needs to form a relationship with at least one primary caregiver for normal social and emotional development. It explains how a child's relationship with their parents affects their growth. The development of attachment theory is an interdisciplinary study, encompassing evolutionary theory, psychology, and ethology. The plight of homeless and orphaned children presented significant challenges after World War II. The United Nations subsequently pointed to the work of physician and psychoanalyst John Bowlby on this subject, which addressed maternal deprivation. Attachment theory evolved as a result of Bowlby's subsequent research. It now studies growth, factors affecting attachment, psychological resilience, marital problems, as well as secure and insecure attachment in children and adults. It also examines psychological stress, personality types, and their coping mechanisms to avoid pathological attachment, which negatively impacts the individual, family, and society.
