The Areca Palm, scientifically known as Dypsis lutescens or Chrysalidocarpus lutescens, is also known as the Butterfly Palm due to its fronds resembling a butterfly. Native to Madagascar, this palm is excellent for filling corners of the home with its outward-arching leaves. It can be distinguished from other indoor palms like Kentia or Parlor Palm by its densely packed fronds aligned along the stems.

Considered an air-purifying plant according to a NASA study from the 1980s, it gained popularity for its ability to add humidity, purify surrounding air, and ease of care. Moreover, it is non-toxic to humans and pets.

The Areca Palm grows up to 2 to 3 meters tall. Its new branches grow directly from the roots, giving it a bushy appearance, and it is generally slow-growing. It requires very bright, indirect light and room temperatures of about 18 to 27 degrees Celsius. Do not water until the soil surface dries out, as constant moisture may cause root rot. It loves humidity; therefore, regularly mist the leaves. Repot to a larger container every two to three years when roots fill the pot.

In dry conditions, it might attract spider mites and needs frequent misting. Yellowing or browning leaves indicate dry soil, over-fertilization, or salt buildup. Fertilize with a multipurpose fertilizer monthly, except during dormancy in winter.

Propagation is by seeds or division, but it is challenging for home growers.
