Ever since linguistics achieved a high degree of scientific rigor in the study and analysis of language, the critical methodologies that emerged from it have aspired to achieve the same status among the humanities. The goal was to elevate literary criticism from the level of interpretation and exegesis (L’interprétation), which is subject to the culture, awareness, and insight of the literary critic, to a more scientific standing. However, the challenge has always been the nature of literary-figurative language, which inevitably differs from natural language. Structural linguistics succeeded in studying and describing natural language by focusing on the opposing and contradictory 'dualities' upon which it is built, which are inherent to its core and not externally imposed.
