A letter from Mahmoud Shuqair to Ibrahim Nasrallah:

Dear friend Ibrahim Nasrallah, Greetings from Jerusalem. It is as if you live with us, placing your hand on our pain and our worries. The wonderful thing is also that you write about a stage we are still living through. You made the right choice when you decided to write (The Palestinian Comedy) from many different aspects. Soon, you will be a pioneer in this field, and your successive novels will serve as a contemporary epic for the Palestinian people in a constantly renewed artistic framework.

In your novel (Amna's Weddings): you chose a difficult subject, death and martyrdom, a topic that tempts wailing, crying, lamentation, and melodrama. But you skillfully moved away from all that and began to delve into the Palestinian condition that lies between the extremes of joy and sorrow, the wedding and the funeral. You engaged with death with depth and intelligence, illuminating a new side of the Palestinian experience. This novel of yours proceeds smoothly and capably, and assigning the heroism and narration to women has given the novel a special splendor and beauty. Rand, Lamees, Amna, the grandmother, and (the two angels) are unforgettable characters.

The same is true in (Under the Morning Sun), where you succeeded in portraying the crisis of this ambiguous stage and in observing the character of the Doctor, a persuasive pest. The two children, Nimr and Nu'man, cannot be forgotten, nor can Umm al-Walid, Noura, Naeem, Yassin, Saleem, and the Doctor. And Warda, too, is a charming and fertile female character.

You speak of us in a captivating style, and you see us in a beautiful and correct way. I see that you are completing what Ghassan Kanafani could not complete, wishing you a long life to accomplish your great narrative project.
