He is considered one of the prominent literary voices in contemporary Iraq, known for his focus on identity issues and cultural conflict amid political and social changes. His first novel, "Night of the Angel," won the Best Iraqi Novel award in 1999, and his short story collection "The Smell of Cinema" gained wide popularity and was reprinted several times.
