Al-Zuhd - Al-Aqidah. Asceticism in the face of fleeting possessions and a transient world is the only lifeboat from its sea of delusion and distraction. This is what Islam ordained when it prescribed a way for us to live a sound life, while simultaneously endearing the Hereafter—the eternal abode—to our hearts. Just as the Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded us to work for our worldly life as if we would live forever, he reminded us to work for the Hereafter as if we would die tomorrow. This is the challenging balance by which we live our lives under the guidance of Islam, with hearts attached to meeting the Most Merciful and yearning for eternal life.

In the history of the prophets, messengers, companions, and their followers, we find numerous lessons, morals, and examples of the ascetic life lived by those who could have possessed the world. You will see glimpses of these examples in this book by Imam "Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal," in which he has compiled accounts of the asceticism of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Solomon, Joseph, Moses, Jesus, Noah, Job, and the rest of the prophets (peace be upon them), as well as the asceticism of Al-Siddiq, Al-Faruq, Dhul-Nurayn, and other noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and others (may Allah have mercy on them).
