Kitab "Al-Umm" is a comprehensive jurisprudential encyclopedia of the Shafi'i school of thought, representing the culmination of Imam Al-Shafi'i's final rulings and legal opinions. He dictated the book in Egypt after he had settled there, making it the refined summary of his matured ideas. The title "Al-Umm" (The Mother/The Source) signifies that it is the principal text collecting his fiqh. Historians are unanimous that "Al-Umm" was transmitted through the narration of Al-Rabi' bin Sulayman Al-Muradi, a trusted and faithful student of the Imam.
