Jalal returns to his pine village to find that his grandmother's house, where he grew up, is not as he left it. The villagers had stormed it, destroying the furniture under the belief that its owner, Hajjah Hadiya, was a friend of the jinn. Subhiya, a widowed neighbor, visits Jalal and offers to clean the house, and their relationship evolves into a physical one. However, the memory of an old love is rekindled by a phone call from his cousin Salma, while Rozette, the wife of his friend Adnan, also desires something from him. Suddenly, the villagers' attitude towards Hajjah Hadiya shifts. Miracles are attributed to her from beyond the grave, leading them to venerate her as a saint and visit her shrine for blessings. This displeases the 'Ahl al-Sirat' (People of the Path), who argue that God sent prophets, not prophetesses, to humanity. This captivating novel explores the conflict between innate and partisan religiosity in a southern Lebanese village where the inhabitants sense spirits without truly perceiving them.
