Al-Musannaf is a hadith encyclopedia, one of the largest collections of the Prophetic Sunnah. It includes marfu' (raised) hadiths and the traditions of the Salaf (predecessors), rightfully earning the description given by its verifier: "It is the collector of collections, and the diwan of diwans." This is further supported by the statement of the scholar Al-Ramahurmuzi in "Al-Muhaddith Al-Fasil": "He was unique in the multitude of his chapters, the excellence of his arrangement, and the quality of his compilation." Hafiz Ibn Kathir said of it in "Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah": "One of the great scholars and imams of Islam, and the author of the Musannaf, the like of which has never been compiled by anyone, neither before him nor after him."
Although it is arranged according to fiqh (jurisprudential) chapters, it also gives great attention to other branches of knowledge. It is not limited to legal rulings, as is common in the books of "Sunan," but also includes chapters on encouragement, admonition, tribulations, and other topics.
The book (Al-Musannaf) has increased in beauty and splendor, especially as Allah destined for its verification and care the great scholar, verifier, and meticulous hadith scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Awwamah. The period of his verification of this book spanned sixteen years, during which he followed a precise verification methodology summarized as follows: collecting the largest possible number of its manuscripts scattered in libraries around the world, then carefully and patiently comparing them. This process revealed a number of errors and distortions that had appeared in previous editions of this book, as is well-known among students of knowledge.
